Gurk takes a deep breath. As usual, he won't open fire on a creature until it has demonstrated hostile intent. He has taken a careful note of the ground around him should he need to roll away from a kick, or a bite.
He lowers his weapon slightly. Quietly, he calls out to the animal, keeping his voice soft, and low. "Hey there," he says. He looks towards it, but keeps direct eye contact brief and avoids showing his teeth. This may - or may not - show it he is not hostile.
He keeps up a stream of gentle, calming noises, mostly nonsense. "Hey big fella. Hello there." He can't help but notice the animal has an awful lot of sharp bits. He stays still, but keeps his body loose, and tries to look relaxed and unthreatened.
